On October 23, 2025, members of Breakthrough-South Magnet School's Young Women's Empowerment Group, led by school Executive Assistant, Lizbeth Gomez showed up, raised their voices, and marched down Park Street in a community action called Latinos Against Domestic Violence, planned by the Hispanic Health Council. They were able to march with author Daisy Plaza who wrote, I Did It for Her: From Trauma and Fear to Pure Love and Strength. Later this month, the group will be able to have a discussion with the author.

We are so proud of this philanthropic student group from Breakthrough Magnet School - South who walk the walk of their school's credo. Their school is the first of only two magnet schools in the nation whose theme is character education/Social-Emotional Learning, and now, is the first and only school in Connecticut to provide Mindfulness training to all students.
Last year, the group collected items to donate to the patients of Helen Gray Cancer Center in Hartford. On May 17, 2024, the girls dropped off the collected items and met the Director and Head Physician from the center.
They also regularly hold donation drives for Hands on Hartford in support of people experiencing displacement. You can read more here: Breakthrough-South Young Women's Empowerment Group Supports Local Non-Profit
